Inventory what your pages load
Our suggested first step is a font inventory: family, weight, style and the templates that use each file. Theme settings and page-builder styles can make it easy to request variants that never appear in the final design.
Make text available promptly
Google’s font guidance discusses font-display and the tradeoffs between delayed text and a fallback-font swap. A swap can change line lengths and cause layout movement, so choose a fallback with attention to its metrics.
Trim with care
WOFF2 and appropriate subsetting can reduce transferred font data. Keep every character set your content needs; a smaller font file is not helpful if names or translated text lose their intended rendering.
Review the reading experience
After a change, check headings, navigation, forms and long paragraphs on a phone. Observe the initial load and the moment the font arrives. Our editorial recommendation is to prioritize readable content over retaining a weight that adds little visible value.
