Menu or form broken after optimization? Collect the right evidence

Isolate a JavaScript optimization regression and prepare a useful support report with errors, steps and rollback details.

A reproducible failed action and its first relevant error are more useful than a list of enabled settings.

Restore the visitor task first

If a menu or form stops working after a change, return to the last known working configuration where possible. On staging, reproduce the change separately. Record exactly what a visitor does and what happens instead. Avoid piling on more optimization settings while the original failure remains unexplained.

Inspect browser evidence

WordPress's debugging guide explains how browser developer tools expose JavaScript errors. Open the console, reload and reproduce the action. Save the relevant error text and the script URL. In network tools, look for failed script requests. Remove personal information or tokens before sharing the record with support.

Separate settings one at a time

If several settings changed together, restore the baseline and reintroduce one documented setting at a time. Test the same menu or form after each step. Record whether the failure happens only on a fresh load, only for signed-out visitors or only on mobile. These distinctions can narrow the developer's investigation without guessing the responsible file.

Check dependency behavior with the developer

A script may rely on another script or a particular initialization sequence. Ask the plugin or theme maintainer which documented exclusions are required. Do not paste arbitrary exception lists from an unrelated site. The correct decision depends on the actual component and the optimization behavior being applied.

Use a compact support handoff

Include the page URL, reproduction steps, expected behavior, actual behavior, setting that triggers the failure and relevant error. Add the confirmed rollback. A test account should have only the access necessary for support. Keep the public task working while the maintainer investigates, then rerun the full journey after the proposed fix.

Put it into practice

  • Restore the last working visitor experience.
  • Reproduce on staging with one setting.
  • Record console and failed-request evidence.
  • Ask for component-specific documented exclusions.
  • Retest the complete journey after the fix.
