Know what each signal measures
Largest Contentful Paint (LCP) describes loading of the largest visible content element. Interaction to Next Paint (INP) describes responsiveness to interactions. Cumulative Layout Shift (CLS) measures unexpected visual movement.
Read the thresholds correctly
Google’s good thresholds are LCP at or below 2.5 seconds, INP at or below 200 milliseconds and CLS at or below 0.1. Evaluate the 75th percentile, with mobile and desktop considered separately. A single fast test does not establish that your visitors meet those targets.
Separate field evidence from diagnosis
Field data reflects real visits. Lab tools help investigate a controlled scenario. A standard Lighthouse page-load test cannot measure INP because it does not include user interaction; Total Blocking Time is a useful lab proxy. Use both types of evidence instead of treating them as interchangeable.
Make a page-level action list
Our suggested approach is to group your site by template: articles, products, archives and landing pages. For each, note the opening content, interactive controls and elements that move. Pick one observed problem, make a focused change and then check the affected visitor journey again.
